Text-to-Give Fundraising for the Successful, Smaller Nonprofit


How Text-to-Give Works

  1. Choose a keyword that will trigger your text-to-give donation sequence. For example, ITL2017, GUARDIAN, AUTISM. Your keyword can be any combination of letters and numbers. Must be 5 or more characters. No spaces or special characters.

  2. Once you have your keyword in mind, head over to the order form.

  3. Choose your package, supply your PayPal email.

  4. Give us the link to your fundraising page, if applicable.

  5. Give us your text message reply.

  6. Tell us whether you want to use us, PayPal or your own payment gateway as your payment processor.

  7. Similar to the Red Cross, we set up your keyword on our short code, which is 77948, usually within the hour.

  8. Done!

Now, when a prospective donor texts your keyword to 77948, she receives a prompt to donate to your registered charity. The prompt includes a link to your mobile-friendly PayPal or other checkout page to complete her donation. (Note: we do not bill the donor’s phone bill).

New TCPA Guidance on Text-to-Give

Did you know that the TCPA has different regulations on the use of text message marketing for nonprofits than it for for-profits? Nonprofits are exempt from some of the stricter SMS regulations that for-profits must follow. Basically, for a nonprofit, if you’ve previously gotten oral consent from your members, you may send SMS blasts to them without having to get written consent. In practice this means that, so long as the nonprofit has acquired the phone numbers of members in a way that implies consent, whether written or otherwise, the organization can send a text message to members. These rules empower peer-to-peer fundraising for ministries, workplace giving, humanitarian causes and other charitable organizations.

For example, your volunteers can be at a live event and still easily show a giver or advocate how to accept donations using her mobile device. Sponsors aren’t tied to a PC or a checkbook to give.

Our Text-to-Give Works With Any Payment Processor

(Including Network for Good, PayPal, GoFundMe, Stripe, iATS, BluePay, Heartland, Fundly, BlackBaud, or your custom payment processor)

In the illustration above, the prospective donor texted the keyword AUTISM to the short code, 77948. (You may have multiple keywords). The short code (77948) responds with a welcome message, followed by a link to complete the donation. When the prospect clicks the link, she is taken to the nonprofit's mobile-friendly checkout page (in this case, the nonprofit is using PayPal). The donor then enters the amount and decides whether the donation will be one-time or recurring. Next, the donor has the option of either logging in to PayPal and paying with her PayPal balance or her bank account. If the donor does not have PayPal, she can still donate by selecting "Donate with a debit or credit card." In this case, the donor won't need to log into PayPal. She will only need to enter her card details and donate that way.
